Ellie, a new student at Skinner High School, is determined to make friends. When she attends the first psychology club meeting she finds herself in the room with twenty strangers who seem to know each other well. She plans to attend a few more meetings before deciding whether she will join.

Demonstrate how each of the following could help play a role in Ellie's quest for friendship
-mere exposure effect: exposure over time and an outcome of increased liking
-mnemonic device: could help Ellie learn names, locate meetings, etc.
-Schachter two-factor theory: physiology and a linked cognitive appraisal or label
-locus of control: effect of having (or not having) personal control over situations; external or internal; having an internal locus of control can make a person more likable

Answer:

The mere exposure effect (HELP)

The longer Ellie exposes herself to the club members the more they will begin to like her.

Mnemonic device (HELP)

Technique that helps us retain or retrieve memory

Ellie can use a mnemonic device to retain the names of the club members and be able to retrieve them later which may assist her in using their names to call each member, remembering names may show she is also interested in the people within the group.

Schachter 2-factor theory (HELP)how we feel about the physical arousal that we experience at that moment

If Ellie can approach the group calmly without letting it spark any fear towards her she will have a positive attitude towards it and a feeling of excitement that may make her show interest amongst her group members and not cling to the corner. Seeing her excitement about the group may draw them closer.

Locus of control (HELP)belief that you have control over the outcome of any event in your life

If Ellie approaches this group confidently and use her locus control to meet people in the group and make friends and maybe being the one to make the first approach to them;take control of the situation.

It will be easier to come to the group.
