Answer:

To put a little bit of context, the French once regarded as one of the strongest Kingdom in Europe,

They used the monarch system, which provide one individual (the King) with absolute power to create any laws He wants. The people who are close to the KInd (such as the relatives, families of trusted advisers ,etc) held the status as 'Nobles'.

In that time, The disparity of power between the commoners and the nobles are extremely large.

The people basically have 0 influence in the political process , and the people who dare to criticize the way the nobles operated the country could be executed without any Legal process.

This condition lasted for more than 900 years. Within that time frame, generations of commoners have to endure the suffering that is caused by selfish nobles. For example, to address the nation's debt, all the nobles did was raises taxes for the commoners. Leaving many of them starved in the street while they're living in luxury. Eventually, the people rise up and took the power from the nobles. This event was known as the French Revolution.
