The larger of two numbers is one more than three times the smaller number. If the sum of the numbers is 49 find the numbers

Answer:

Smaller number = 12, Larger number = 37

Explanation:

Let the smaller number be y.

So, the larger number = 3y + 1

Sum of both the numbers = 49

y + (3y +1) = 49

or, 4y = 49 -1 = 48

⇒ y = 48/4 = 12

So, the smaller number = 12

The larger number is (3y + 1) = 3(12) + 1 = 37

So, both the numbers are 12 and 37.
