Runner A is initially 8.2 km west of a flagpole and is running with a constant velocity of 5.8 km/h due east. Runner B is initially 3.0 km east of the flagpole and is running with a constant velocity of 5.6 km/h due west. What will be the distance of the two runners from the flagpole when their paths cross?

Answer:

Explanation:

Given

Runner A is 8.2 km from pole and Runner B is 3 km from pole

Runner A velocity
(v_A)=5.8 km/h

Runner B velocity
(v_B)=5.6 km/h

let A traveled x km in t hr

so B travels 8.2+3-x km in t hr

(x)/(5.8)=(11.2-x)/(5.6)

x=5.69 km

therefore Distance of A from pole is 8.2-5.69=2.3 km

Distance of B from pole B is 5.69-3=2.69 km
