The independent variable is graphed on the x-axis. The dependent variable, which changes in response to the independent variable, is graphed on the y-axis. Controlled variables are usually not graphed because they should not change.

Answer: The independent variable is always the one that we are changing. The dependent variable is that which changes because of that. Looking at it another way, the independent variable is the cause and the dependent variable is the effect. The controlled variable is something that is held constant throughout the experiment but is NOT part of the experiment. Sometimes we say an experiment is conducted at "standard temperature and pressure." These would be controlled variables.
