A science club sold big candles and small candles for a fundraiser. The club earned

$3 for every small candle sold and $4.50 for every large candle sold. At the end of
the fundraiser, they found that they had sold 27 more big candles than small
candles. They made $234 more from the sale of big candles than they did from the
small candles. How much money in total did the club make from selling candles?

Answer:

$684

Explanation:

Let number of small candles be x

let number of big candles be y

y - 27 = x [they had sold 27 more big candles than small candles. ]

4.5y - 234 = 3x [They made $234 more from the sale of big candles than they did from the small candles]

Let's replace first equation in 2nd and get y:

4.5y - 234 = 3(y-27)\\4.5y-234=3y-81\\1.5y=153\\y=102

and x = 102 - 27 = 75

Amount made from small candles = 75 * 3 = 225

Amount made from big candles = 4.5 * 102 = 459

Total = $684
