Billy and 3 of his friends want to take a road trip, but have a limited

amount of money. Billy's car holds 4 people and gets 34 miles per
gallon of gas (mpg). The students want to go to San Francisco for the
day. It is 646 miles (round-trip) to San Francisco, and gas is $2.00
per gallon. How much money would each student have to pay in order
for them to make it to San Francisco and back home again?

Answer:

$9.50

Explanation:

to drive 646 miles with 34 miles per gallon, the amount of gallons of gas needed will be:

646/34 = 19 gallons of gas

$2 is the cost of 1 gallon, so 19 gallons would cost:

19 * 2 = $38

Billy and 3 friends = 4 person

Each would pay:

38/4 = $9.50 per person
