The colonists wanted to be free from English taxation, among other things! Following the Stamp, Townshed, etc. Acts, colonists were tired of being taxed without having representation in English Parliament. (“No Taxation Without Representation”) I hope this helped!

Answer:

The American colonists fought the British for one main reason. They fought because they wanted to be independent and to be independent was from the British taxation. Many Americans believed the British government did not have a right to tax on them.
