In a reforestation program, 4250 seedlings were planted. Three times as many hemlocks as spruces were planted. The number of oaks planted was 50 more than twice

the number of spruces. How many of each type of seedling was planted?
Let x = the number of spruce seedlings. Write an equation, in terms of x, for the 4250 seedlings that were planted.
=4250

Answer:

The number of : Spruce planted is 700

:Oaks planted is 1450

:Hemlocks planted is 2100

Explanation:

Let the number of spruce planted = k

So,the number of hemlocks planted = 3k

And, the number of oaks planted = 50 + 2k

Total saplings planted = 4250

Now, Total saplings planted = Number of { spruce planted + oaks planted + hemlocks planted}

or, 4250 = k + 3k + (50 +2k)

⇒ 4250 - 50 = 6k

or, 6k = 4200

⇒ k = (4200 / 6) = 700 ⇒ k = 700

So, the number of spruce planted = 700

Number of Oaks planted = 50 + 2k = 50 + 1400 = 1450

ans, the number of hemlocks planted= 3k = 3 x 700 = 2100
