A family went to a baseball game. They parked the car in a parking lot which charged $20. The cost per ticket was $28. Write an equation for the total cost of going to the baseball game, where y is the total cost and x is the total number of people. If the family spent $188, how many people went to the game?

Answer:

6 people went to the game.

28×6=188 if you include the cost of parking, which is 20.

a) y = 28x + 20

b) Plug in 188 for y and solve algebraically:

188 = 28x +20

subtract 20 from both sides

168 = 28x

divide 28 from both sides

6 = x
