In 2017, solar and wind electricity generation totaled 218 thousand megawatt hours (MWH) Wind generated 2 thousand MWH more than seven times that generated by solar energy. How much was generated by each source?

Answer:

Energy generated by Solar is 27,000 MWH

Energy generated by Wind is 191,000 MWH

Explanation:

The total amount of energy generated = 218,000 MWH

Let the energy generated by solar = S megawatt hours

So, according to the question,

Energy generated by the Wind = 2,000 + 7S

Now, Total energy generated = Wind Energy + Solar Energy

or, 218, 000 MWH = (S) MWH + + (2,000 + 7S) MWH

or, S + 7S + 2,000 = 218,000

or, 8S = 218,000 - 2000 = 2,16,000

S = (2,16,000)/(7)  = 27,000

Hence, S = 27,000 MWH

or Energy generated by Solar is 27,000 MWH

⇒ Energy generated by the Wind = 2,000 + 7S = 2,000 + (27,000 x 7)

or, generated Wind Energy = 191,000 MWH
