That means that the length is 7 + 7 = 14

The width does not change and it is 4

The total area is 14 * 4 = 56 square units.

Now find the area of the right triangle.

Area rt triangle = 1/2 b * h

b = 4

h = 7

Area rt triangle = 4 * 7 / 2 = 14

You want the are of everything but the the right triangle.

Area shaded part = Total area - area right triangle = 56 - 14 = 42
