Given : The square is made up of 4 identical rectangles. The perimeter of each rectangle is 40 cm.

To find : What is the area of the square?

Solution :

4 identical rectangle having perimeter of 40 cm.

Let a be the length and b be the width of the rectangle,.

i.e.
P=40


2(a+b)=40


a+b=20 ....(1)

Total width of the square form is b+b+b+b=4b

In square the side length is given by a=4b

Substitute in (1),


4b+b=20


5b=20


b=4

i.e. a=4(4)=16

The length of the square is given by l=16

The area of the square is
A=l^2


A=16^2


A=256\ cm^2

Therefore, The area of the square is 256 centimeter square.
