Answer:

James must score 40 on the next test to have a 70 average in the course

Solution:

Given that score of James in four tests are 79, 80, 79 and 72.

Need to determine how much he score in fifth test to make an overall average of 70.

Let’s assume score required in fifth test to make an average of 70 = x

\text { Average of test score }=\frac{\text { sum of scores in five tests }}{\text { number of tests }}

On substituting given values and assumed values in above formula we get

70=(79+80+79+72+x)/(5)

70
* 5 = 310 + x

x = 350 – 310 = 40

Hence James requires 40 marks in fifth test to make an average of 70.
