hannah spends 20% of her money on sweets and 32% on fares. if she spent $8 on sweets what is:
(1) the amount of money she originally had?
(2) the amount of money spent on fares?
(3) the amount she has left?

1) $40

2) $12.80

3) $19.20

Explanation:

(a) find: 8 is 20% of what number

use proportion: is = percent

of 100

is = 8

of = what you're solving for, let's say 'x'

20% = 20/100

8 = 20

x 100

cross-multiply: 20x = 800

x = 40

(b) money spent on fares: 32% of 40 is what number?

32 = y

100 40

1280 = 100y

y = 12.80

3) 40 - (8.0 + 12.80) = 40 - 20.8 = 19.20
