Two vertices of a rectangle are (8, −5) and (8, 7). If the area of the rectangle is 72 square units, name the possible location of the other two vertices.

Answer:

The coordinates of the other two points are:

(2,7)

(2, -5)

Explanation:

So we already have a value:

  • The area of the rectangle = 72u²*

* "u" means "Square units"

Once we draw the coordinates on the map, we can find that the length of the like drawn is equal to 12u (see attachment)

With this values we can now substitute tem on the area formula:

area = Base x Length

72u = Base x 12u

Since 12u are being multiplied by the base, we can pass it to the left dividing the number 72u:


(72u)/(12u) = Base

And then we can solve the area formula:


(72u)/(12u) = 6u

Now that we know the area, we can calculate the base and draw an horizontal line from any of the points marked on the drawing to know one of the opposite sides of the rectangle.
