Alrighty, so Charles shot 40 times and of those 40 times, he missed 10 times. We can represent that as a fraction:

10/40

It also says that if he were to shoot 8 times, how many baskets would he miss. In the fraction above we have:

shots missed/total shots

Proportions can help us solve this:

10/40 = x/8 (we have an x because we don't know how many baskets he missed; that's what we're trying to find)

Now we can cross multiply and arrive at our answer, x:

40x = 80

x = 2

This means that Charles must've missed 2 shots.
