Explanation:

the degree of monomial is basically all of the exponents added up

so:

x's exponent + y's exponent + z's exponents = the degree

So:

1+2+z's exponent = 8

(since x to the power of 1 = x)

3+z's exponent = 8

Subtract 3 from each side:

z's exponent = 5
