Doyle most likely chose Watson as his narrator because it was in choosing the ‘ordinary man’ to look in on the world that he was able to show it from what our perspective would be like. Readers are able to connect to the story through Watson as he is just as amazed and confused by Holmes as we might be. It also allows us to solve mysteries at our own pace and tease us with things that we would not be able to understand without Holmes. Using Holmes as the narrator would most likely prevent us from being as awed by his prowess and ruin endings as Holmes finishes with a big reveal.
