Englishmen started to settle in North America assuming to practice religious free will and follow a religion without any restrictions.
Calvert was one such English man who observed America to be a place to follow religion which he liked but the English King Charles was so strict that he did not practice religious tolerance. This made Calvert’s son Ceelius to establish a colony in Maryland and practiced Catholicism which he liked. This colony allowed religious freedom.
Puritans who were Protestants and believed orthodox Christianity began to grow in large number in Maryland, the colony’s legislature passed an act which proclaimed toleration that it shall protect all Christians who believed in Jesus and it also declared that those who denied their belief in Jesus were rendered death penalty. Though it appeared vto be harsh now it gave lots of religious freedom in Maryland.
