Let

x -----> the number of $1 bills

y ----> the number of $5 bills

we know that


x+y=48 -----> equation A


x=5y -----> equation B

Solve the system by substitution method

substitute equation B in equation A and solve for y


5y+y=48


6y=48


y=8

Find the value of x


x=5y


x=5(8)=40

The total money that Dan has is


40(1)+8(5)=\$80

therefore

Dan has 8 bills of $5 and 40 bills of $1

The total money that Dan has is $80
