Holland added three decimals that made a sum of 2. One of the decimals was 0.34. What are two other decimals Holland could have used to make a sum of 2? Explain how you know.

Solution:

Let us assume that the three decimals are x, y and z.

As given in the problem one of the decimal z = 0.34

The sum of the three decimal is 2

So,
x +y +z = 2


x + y +0.34 =2 (substituting the value of z)


x + y = 2 - 0.34


x + y = 1.66

Now as there is no rule for the other two decimals, so we can take any two decimals whose sum is 1.66

So the values can be (1.01, 0.65) or (1.06, 0.6) or (0.83, 0.83) etc.
