Wilson defeated Charles Evans Hughes in the Election of 1916 for all of the following reasons except the last option provided: Wilson's sweep of the Eastern part of the country overcame his narrow loss in California.
He won re-election in 1916 by appealing particularly to progressives in the Midwest and the West. Besides, he claimed victory because of the third-party Progressive challenge that split the Republicans.
