The basic structure of Brazil's government is federal republic. Federal republic means division of powers between the government, and individual subdivisions. The control of major powers like defence, security, and monetary policy are at the federal level, while others like infrastructure, local decisions, education policy and maintenance comes under state level.

It has three independent branches: executive, legislative and judicial. Executive power is governed by the President, with the advice of cabinet. Legislative power is by Congress, Judicial is governed by the judiciary, supported by Supreme and regional Courts

Brazil's unusual voting requirements is compulsory voting. Voting is made Compulsory for literate under the age group 18 to 70 years old, includes the citizens live in abroad too and Not compulsory for the age group of 16 to 17 , more than 70 or illiterate of any age.

A justification form need to be submitted for not voting at election centres and post offices.The drastic increase in invalid balloting in Brazil elections results in the necessity and importance of institutional reforms in order to achieve democratic country, with important implications.
