For this case we have that by definition, the area of a rectangle is given by:

A = w * l

Where:

w: It is the width

l: It is the length

Thus, the area of the rug is:

A = 8 * 10\\A = 80 \ ft ^ 2

We know that the room has an area of
288 \ ft ^ 2. Subtracting we have:

288 \ ft ^ 2-80 \ ft ^ 2 = 208 \ ft ^ 2

Thus, the space between the wall and the rug is given by
208 \ ft ^ 2

ANswer:

The space between the wall and the rug is given by
208 \ ft ^ 2
