Excerpt from The Dog, the Rooster, and the Fox

adapted from Aesop’s tale

Dog and Rooster were great friends. They had lived on a farm together happily for a long time but then decided that they wanted to see the world. So far, they had traveled for a week and had seen beautiful mountains, hills, and valleys. They had enjoyed seeing new places and learning new things.

Now, they had arrived in a different part of the country where they did not know any animals. A light rain had fallen for most of the morning, but the sun was peeking through the clouds. The friends walked into a large meadow that was dotted with oak and maple trees.
