the sum of their ages is 24, how old is Jeanine?

Write equations for the given information to solve (using J for Jeanine and M for Marc):
J=2M
J+M= 24
Now substitute 2M in for J in the second equation:
2M+M=24, 3M=24, M=8
Remember that J=2M, so if M=8, J=16.
So Jeanine is 16 and Marc is 8
