If the British were practicing salutary neglect (letting the colonies run their own affairs), why did they suddenly step in and try to control the colonies?

Answer:

becuase england kept going broke so they decided to keep taking the colonies and then taxes got way too high so the people started to fight it and then later we wanted to be are own country but they still wanted money so we fought and we won

because the British technically still owned the colonies and when they tried to step in, the colonists were not happy due to the fact that they could thrive on their own without the help or govern of the British
