Explanation:

originally you would be looking at f(x).

Then you say that x=5 because you are looking for f(5).

Now, you are given 4 points. Look for which one has 5 in the x. Remember (x, y).

The last one (5, -8) is the one you are looking for because 5 is in the x. So what you get out after you put 5 in the function is -8 (which is your y).

Note: x is your input and y is your output.

Another way to look at this is by putting it in a table:

x y

-4 -2

-1 5

3 4

5 -8

To shorten it, when you plug 5 into x, you will get -8.
