Answer:

In a two-dimensional graph, (with two axes), generally the independent variable is plotted on the x-axis and the dependent variable is plotted on the y-axis. In layman's terms, you can say that the y-axis contains “what you are measuring” and the x-axis contains “what you are measuring at / against / with respect to”.
