You have the option to rent a snow plow for $20 and then $4 per hour or pay your neighbor Kevin 58 per hour. How many hours will be required in order to have the costs be the same? Which will be least expensive if it only takes 3 hours to clear the driveway? Equation: Solve: Answers:

Answer:

a) 0.37 hours

b) It would be less expensive to rent it if we're going to use it for 3 hours.

Explanation:

If you rent the snow plow for x hours, you would pay 20 + 4x.

If you pay Kevin x hours you would pay 58x

a)How many hours will be required in order to have the costs be the same?

20+4x=58x\\20=58x-4x\\20=54x\\20/54=x\\.37=x

The costs would be the same if we use the snow plow for .37 hours.

b) If it takes 3 hours to clean the driveway:

The amount we would pay to rent it would be: 20 + 4(3) = 20 + 12 = 32 dollars.

If we pay Kevin, we would pay 58(3) = 174 dollars

The option of renting it would be cheaper.
