The brain volumes (cm cubed) of 50 brains vary from a low of 904 cm cubed to a high of 1488 cm cubed. Use the range rule of thumb to estimate the standard deviation s and compare the result to the exact standard deviation of 175.5 cm cubed, assuming the estimate is accurate if it is within 15 cm cubed

Answer:

standard deviation is 146 cm

Computed value of standard deviation is not near to original value.

Explanation:

Given data:

n is number of brains = 50

low volume = 904 cm

high volume of brain = 1488 cm

As we know that range is 4 times the standard deviation so we have
Range = 4* standard\ deviation

R = HIGH - LOW

= 1488 - 904

= 584

Therefore we have

standard deviation
= (R)/(4)

= (584)/(4)

standard deviation is 146 cm

Original deviation is given as 175.5 cm

Computed value of standard deviation is not near to original value.
