a) 12x + 7 < -11

12x < -11-7

12x < -18

x < -18/12

⇒ Simplify: divide the numerator by 6

x < -3/2

b) 5x – 8 > 40

5x > 40+8

5x > 48

x > 48/5

Therefore, x>48/5 or x<-3/2.
