1. Obelisks originated in Ancient Egypt and are man-made pillars made from stone. From Egypt, they spread around the world and can be found in Greek and Roman cultures as well. They are some-times referred to as 'pins' due to their unique shape.

2. An Obelisk is a narrow, four-sided tower-like structure, with a small pyramid tip. They are usually decorated with stone carvings either with pictures or text describing an event.

3. The Egyptians were prolific builders and had a lot of unique tools to aid in their construction projects. For Obelisk, they mostly use clay, limestone, reed stone, hammers and mullets to create strong monuments that still survive to this day.

5. The carving techniques were used to make pictures and write on the obelisk. Basic techniques of stone-building, popular at the time were used to make them. It should be remembered that many of these obelisks were carved out of rock itself.

6. Obelisk were not only tall but also heavy and it required a lot of workers. A system of pulleys and levers was used and thick ropes, attached to the top and the bottom of the Obelisk helped to erect the Obelisk.

7. Obelisks were mostly placed at the entrance of temples, castles and cities. As such, they were seen as 'doors' to a new place and sometimes forms the basis of an area.

For example, it can even turn the area into a city center of sorts and a place of meeting, while at the same time, it signifies the importance of where it is placed. Many Kings used these obelisks to project their power and authority and in turn, it has a huge impact on the local area.
