Answer:

D. The are panicked, and her husband spends hours searching for it.

Step-by-step explanation:

The short story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant is the story of a housewife who does not seem satisfied with her life. She wants more wealth, is selfish and cares only about physical appearance, wanting to be on the same level as the other rich women.

Mathilde and her husband Mr. Loisel had been invited to a dinner party, a glitzy affair. But, in spite of their lower economic status, her husband being just a mere clerk, she complains that she has no presentable dress to wear. This led to Mr. Loisel had to give up his savings to buy her a new dress. Then again, she complains that she had no jewelry to go along with the dress. So, she borrowed a necklace from a friend, which got lost after the party. Such was their panicked state that Mr. Loisel went back on foot, searching for it along the whole route that they have come through.
