A patient has been ordered medication Cat a dosage of 3680 mg/day. The dosage available is 425 mg each scored tablets. • How many tablets will the nurse administer per day? If the nurse is to administer 1 tablet every 2 hours and the first dose is given at 7am, when is the last dose given?

Answer:

  • about 8 2/3
  • 11 pm

Explanation:

The required dosage in terms of tablets is ...

3680 mg = (3680 mg)/(425 mg/tab) = 8.66 tabs

We don't know how the tablets are "scored", but in my experience they have a groove that facilitates them being cut in half.

We expect the nurse will administer 8 1/2 tablets per day, for a dose of 3613 mg, slightly short of the ordered 3680 mg.

9 doses will be administered over 8 time intervals of 2 hours, so will take until 16 hours after 7 am. The last (1/2) dose will be at 0700 +1600 = 2300 hours, or 11 pm.
