Read “The Poison Tree” by William Blake.

A Poison Tree

I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe:
I told it not, my wrath did grow.

And I watered it in fears
Night and morning with my tears,
And I sunned it with smiles
And with soft deceitful wiles.

And it grew both day and night,
Till it bore an apple bright,
And my foe beheld it shine,
And he knew that it was mine,

And into my garden stole
When the night had veiled the pole;
In the morning, glad, I see
My foe outstretched beneath the tree.

Which of the following themes is suggested by the poem?

A) Anger can grow like a tree if you feed it.

B) Do not tell your friend if you are upset.

C) Do not stir up anger by discussing a problem.

D) Anger cools down over time.

Answer:

A) Anger can grow like a tree if you feed it.

Step-by-step explanation:

The major theme in the poem is anger, and if not controlled and handled correctly, then it leads to cultivation, and this leads to increase of torture that creates anger. According to the poem, anger is never a tree that will be germinating. However, when it is accumulated, it leads to worse scenarios. It is therefore like a seed that is cultivated and waits to germinate. It will then draw once energy and finally to become destructive in once body and it may lead to death.
