Explanation:

1) Multiply -2 times the denominator (9) and add it to the numerator (5)

-13/9 x 1 1/8

2) Multiply 1 times the denominator (8) and add it to the numerator (1) like before

-13/9 x 9/8

3) Multiply the two fractions (but simplify the nines first!)

-13/1 x 1/8 = -13/8
