Explanation:

If you are subtracting fractions that both have a common denominator, think of it like this. so, if you are confused with whole numbers, why not make it improper? multiply the bottom number by the big number next to it, and add the top 2, which should give you 8/3. then subtract 1/3, which is 7/3, and if you simplify it, it should give you 1 1/3! :D
