Answer:

The diameter of the strand of rope is
1.0 * 10^(-3) longer than the diameter of the strand of floss.

Explanation:

Given :

The diameter of a strand of rope is
1.2 * 10^(-3)inch.

The diameter of a strand of floss is
2.0 * 10^(-4)inch.

To Find : How much longer is the diameter of the strand of rope than the diameter of the strand of floss?

Solution:

The diameter of a strand of rope =
1.2 * 10^(-3)=(1.2)/(1000)=0.0012inch.

The diameter of a strand of floss =
2.0 * 10^(-4)=(2)/(10000)=0.0002inch.

Difference = 0.0012-0.0002 = 0.001 =
(1)/(1000)=1.0 * 10^(-3)

So, option D is true .

Hence the diameter of the strand of rope is
1.0 * 10^(-3) longer than the diameter of the strand of floss.

Subtract the diameter of the floss from the diameter of the rope.

1.2*10^-3 - 2.0*10^-4 =

0.0012 - 0.0002 = 0.001

0.001 = 1.0^10^-3

The answer is D. 1.0x10^-3 inch
