Why were elective terms of office made purposely short, seldom more than one or two years​

They made them short so a president would not serve for his lifetime if he wanted to and they made it more than one or two years so there wouldn’t be an election every year(cuz like that people most likely wouldn’t vote )and so the president had enough time to do what he would like to do for the country
