Organisims need food, oxygen, water, and energy. Each organisim gets their energy differently like lets say you have a plant, that is an obvious choice that it needs sun for energy to grow and stay alive. A herbivore lets say a deer eats this plant, the deer also gets the energy from the plant and also the suns energy, then the predator who eats the deer gets the energy that the deer eats which also partially come from the sun and so forth. It is basically a chain of things you get energy from that works together, I hope this helps and makes sense :)
