we know that

The elevation above the surface of the ground is positive

The elevation below the surface of the ground is negative

we have


y=-40\ m ---> is negative because is below the surface of the ground

The work area of the mine is 5 times deeper than the elevation of a mine equipment room

so


x=5y

substitute the value of y


x=5(-40)=-200\ m

therefore

The elevation of the work area is 200 meters below the surface of the ground
