If you think about all the greatest civilizations back in ancient times that had advancements in science you would also find that they generally had better technologies. Science isn't there as a decoration to a society it is INFORMATION or KNOWLEDGE that allowed their civilizations great ADVANTAGES to those that know how to harness its power. There a countless examples of this in history but a great example of this was with the Germans during WW2. With their advancements in aviation they were able to make the luftwaffe a massive bombing plane that gave them an ADVANTAGE during the war. there are so many reasons and examples that could answer this question but this is one of many advancements (good or bad) that brought us the human race to where it is today.
