One number is less than the other so the next equation would be: y=x-8

You can substitute y in the first equation to have x+(x-8)=12

Add the two x's to have 2x and add 8 from both sides (add 8 to both the 12 and 8 to get it to the opposite side of the equal sign to x. This would look like: 2x=20.

Divide 2 by both sides to get 10.

Now you can plug in 2 in place of x in the very first equation again and subtract from both sides to get 2.
