First we need to calculate the time it takes for them to meet

we add the speeds multiplied by the time (substracting the 4 hours difference for the second train) and it would equal the total distance

80 mi/h× T + 68 mi/h× ( T-4h) = 1121 mi

80 mi/h × T + 68 mi/h× T - 68 mi/h × 4 mi = 1121 mi

148 mi/h T = 1121 mi + 272 mi

T = 1393 mi / 148 mi / h = 9.41 h

then we just multiply the speed of the first train times the number of hours and it gives us the distance it traveled
