Two pipes are used to fill a water storage tank. The first pipe can fill the tank in

4 hours, and the two pipes together can fill the tank in
2 hours less time than the second pipe alone. How
long would it take for the second pipe to fill the
tank?

can someone please help, my parents can’t help either ☹️

Answer:

2 hours for the 2 pipes

Explanation:

1 pipe for a tank is 4 hours, but since 2 pipes is 2 hours less, it would take the two pipes together 2 hours

x = time it takes for the second pipe to fill the tank
x-2 = time it takes for both pipes to fill the tank
1/4 = portion of the tank filled by the first pipe in one hour
1/x = portion of the tank filled by the second pipe in one hour
1/(x-2) = portion of the tank filled by both pipes

Now you have your equation,
1/4 + 1/x = 1/(x-2)

You should be good now
