Any time you square something you multiply that number by itself. So in reality that problem would be 2 times 2.

If it were a bigger number you would multiply the number by itself the about of times you see if anything is to the first power it stays the same so squared is a number times itself, and cubed which is the third power would be:

2 x 2 x 2.

2 x 2 or 2 to the second power or 2 squared equals 4.
