4x+y=5

3x+y=3

Subtracted 3x+y=3 from 4x+y=5 .

Thus

4x - 3x + y - y = 5 - 3

x = 2

Put in the equation 4x+y=5 .

4 × 2 + y = 5

8 + y = 5

y = -8 + 5

y = -3
