I am working through the material in my books, and trying to understand this consept now, but if someone could help me with these two questions I would be really greatful!

25. (3 points) Describe what each letter and number in 4d^8 tells you.
a. The ā€œ4ā€ tells you:
b. The ā€œdā€ tells you :
c. The superscript 8 tells you:
26. (4 points) The ground state electron configurations below each contain an error. State the error in each and explain why the configuration is incorrect:
a. 1s^2 2s^2 2p^4 3s^2
b. 1s^2 2s^2 3s^2 3p^4
c. 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^4 3p^5
d. 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 3d^2

Answer:

25.

a. energy level

b. orbital

c. number of electrons in that orbital

Energy level goes from 1 to 7

Orbitals are s, p, d and f

Maximum number of electrons are 2, 6, 10 and 14 for s, p, d and f.

26

a. is wrong because you need to fill an orbital before using the next, 2p allows 6 electrons and after only 4 it goes to 3s which is wrong

b. is wrong because is missing 2p. It goes from 2s to 3s

c. is wrong because 3s only allows 2 electrons and it has 4

d. is wrong because after 3p goes 4s and not 3d

Step-by-step explanation:

To know the order you assign s, p, d and f a number (0,1,2 and 3 respectively).

1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p

using the number assigned to orbitals

1(0) 2(0) 2(1) 3(0) 3(1) 4(0) 3(2) 4(1)

now you sum them:

1 2 3 3 4 4 5 5
